Back to Rainy Boston, Starting at The Jewish Advocate

I don't think I've seen the sun once in the three days since I've been back in Beantown, but I'll be patient--it will come out soon. Until then, I'll probably be carrying my umbrella around regularly.

My internship began Monday, May 23, at 8:30 A.M., and I was on time, give or take two or three minutes. I'm keeping an internship journal that I'll send my professor each week, and it's been helpful to me too; it's a way of looking back at the day and seeing if I've been productive. I also record goals that I set.

So what are my internship goals? I do want to write some stories and contribute regularly to the newspaper. I also want to become very familiar with the newspaper and be better at being clear and concise in my writing. I think the staff and I have worked well together in my first few days.

I actually don't go into the office today, so I took advantage of the day off and carried some clothes to the dry cleaner's, after I finished "Star Wars II: Attack of the Clones." It was urgent for me to rent this movie becuase the third episode came out to theaters last week, and I want to be caught up on the story.

I plan to head to the gym tonight and hopefully get some little research done at the Boston Public Library for a column that the editor at The Jewish Advocate is planning to write. If I can see some friends who are around tonight, that would be great too. Overall, I'm excited to be in Boston this summer.

While I've got your attention, if anyone has any ideas for news appropriate for a Jewish weekly newspaper, feel free to post a comment or send me an email. I'm finding some stories, but I'd appreciate any leads.

I'll write more about the world, the newspaper, and hopefully touch on my recent vacation some more next time. And hopefully we'll get some sun before then.

Peace.

Off to Oregon

Hello, bloggers and blog viewers! It has been a while, has it not? I have succesfully completed my first year of graduate school at Emerson and have the grades to show for it. Now I'm taking a few weeks of vacation before starting my internship at The Jewish Advocate.

I'm currently in my hometown of Lexington, Virginia but am leaving today for Portland, Oregon. I'll visit my sister and her family this week, whom I haven't seen in about a year and a half. They live in the medium-sized town of Bend, Oregon. My grandma, from Cape Cod, Mass. will be joining my parents and me out there.

Everything finished pretty well at Emerson, though I got a B in a class I thought I put a fair amount of work in for. Other grades were fine, and I really feel like I learned loads about journalism this year.

Visiting Virginia has been great. The weather has been absolutely gorgeous, and Saturday I got to see a lot of friends and familiar faces from the past, at the annual Road and River Relay race, which I watched and took a few pictures of, and at a couple of bars downtown. I look forward to a bit more time here after the Oregon trip.

Carnegie and I went to see "Sin City" today. I recommend it, as well as reading the graphic novels it is based on. We then ate at Bang with Carnegie's apartment-mate Isobel and a couple of friends whom I went to the University of Virginia with.

I'll check back for comments and will certainly be looking to post on the events of this trip sometime soon.

Have a good one. Cheers!
